Our presenter this week was LaVonna B Lewis, PhD, MPH. She was definitely one of the best thus far, not to mention she is a Southerner. At the beginning of her presentation Dr. Lewis boldly shared with us her two reasons for existing:
1. “To make the invisible visible”
2. “To make herself and others uncomfortable”
1. It is our jobs as human beings to illuminate the darkness, because we ourselves once were in it and people we know are still in it. I.e; addiction, spirituality, finances, etc.
2. When you are comfortable chances are you aren’t challenging yourself.
If you were to ask a young male(16-21) in a low-income neighborhood what the Affordable Health Care Act was doing for his community? Chances are 9 out of 10 wouldn’t have clue. On the contrary if you were to ask a multi-billionaire son how much a carton of milk cost he probably wouldn’t have a clue. Why? Our individual realities often filter what we see, That’s not to suggest that either one is right or wrong. In fact, it leaves us with an obligation to illuminate each other and in turn, hopefully be enlightened ourselves. The problem with this style of living is that it’s not comfortable! Because it consistently pushes us on a daily basis to get out of ourselves and focus on each other.
Q: What have you made visible lately?
Q: Have you been intentional about stepping outside of your comfort zone?
