The first sentence of Chapter 4 sets the tone for the entire chapter ; “I knew education was not an option; it was a necessity.” This concept was foreign to me in the since of academic achievement when I was coming up, but it was inevitable to receive a hard knock education. Whats the difference between the two? Hard knock education exposes us to the “hard truths” & “harsh realities”, as Chip Murray labels them, that we must learn to navigate through and with as we move from womb to tomb. On the contrary, academic education does what Dr Murray explains from an ancient translation; “Education is from the Latin educo, educare: to draw out- of darkness, of ignorance, of hopelessness or despair.” A combination of the two are a necessity. It’s not enough to simply understand the hard truths and darkness of this world, we must strive to draw out from the darkness into self enlightenment, and then share that light with the world.
