Chapter Two explains Rev Murray’s experience as a child growing up in the midst of Jim Crow law in Lakeland, FL. Yet, in spite of the obvious historical discrimination and consistent life threatening circumstances therein; I must admit that one aspect of Rev Murray’s upbringing made me rather jealous. While being trained on how to “maintain the relative peace in social settings” with white people, a deeper lesson was being taught; “The black family extends beyond bloodlines” as stated by Chip Murray. Extending beyond bloodlines creates a necessary bond in an oppressed community that allows for Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and business woman like Madame C.J Walker to emerge from its tenacious thread. Within my generation an extension beyond bloodlines is almost a foreign concept, heck we are still struggling to extend beyond ourselves. It’s as if we have completely forgotten what gives birth to the best of the human experience- UNITY. Unity cuts across race, culture, country, and gender; true unity speaks to the best of the human spirit and allows for a diligent and awe-inspiring legacy. I believe that my generation is beginning to see the value of extending across bloodlines and all other lines that create segregation, inequality, and sects. Theirs no doubt that it will be a beautiful world when get there, in the meantime their is a lot of work to be done so get busy.
